We went on a tour of hidden tunnels below Clapham High Street to meet the wonderful team at Growing Underground. Their ambition is to turn the growing world on its head and deliver the best produce — fresh, delicious, nutritious, exciting — the best way — clean, sustainable, hyper-local.
They prioritise sustainable growing practices, and are certified Carbon Neutral +, which makes them net carbon negative. Their hydroponics system uses 70% less water than traditional agriculture and all nutrients are kept within the closed-loop system, removing any risk of agricultural run-off. The greens are unaffected by the weather and seasonal changes, and thanks to the central location, it reduces the need to import crops - drastically reducing the carbon footprint for retailers and consumers alike.
